Air-coupled ultrasonic testing is a non-destructive testing method used in various industries to detect and characterise material defects. It uses sound waves above the range audible to humans (75 kHz - 200 kHz). In air-coupled ultrasonic testing, the sound signal is sent without contact by a transducer through the material to be tested and picked up by the opposite transducer. Material interfaces or defects reflect or weaken the sound signal and can thus be detected by this method.

Based on the runtime of the signal and its intensity, various information about the component can be obtained. For example, delamination, larger cracks, porosity, inclusions or changes in wall thickness can be detected. The measurement results are displayed in a C or D image, where the C image represents the intensity and the D image the transit time of the attenuated signal depending on the component position.

Air-coupled ultrasonic testing has the advantage that it can be applied to a wide range of materials, including metals, plastics, ceramics and composites. It is suitable for quality control in production as well as for the inspection of components already in use.

Special test equipment and trained personnel are required to perform air-coupled ultrasonic testing. The tests can be performed either manually or automatically, depending on the size and complexity of the component to be tested. Overall, air-coupled ultrasonic testing is a reliable and effective method of detecting material defects and checking the quality of components. It helps to ensure the safety and reliability of products in various industries.
