Simplification of sample preparation using focused ion beams

Highly integrated microelectronic circuits are built into a variety of modern future technologies. A new research project of the Fraunhofer Institute IMWS and point electronic GmbH is investigating an innovative approach for nanometer-accurate high-throughput sample preparation using focusing ion beam technology (FIB) to simplify the previous device-dependent processes.

Fluorescent Markings for High-Tech Glass

How can a glass object be marked in such a way that it can be clearly assigned within a larger batch or for product tracing? In answering this question, boraident GmbH and the Fraunhofer Institute for Microstructure of Materials and Systems IMWS in Halle (Saale) relied on laser-based fluorescent markings and developed a corresponding process in a joint project.

Optical Materials

The core of our activities involves microstructure-based development of optical materials and components, as well as constantly improving and further developing laser-based material processing techniques. By using highly developed nanoanalytic and surface analytic technology, we are able to gain extensive insight into the microstructure of these materials, which allows us to create optimized microstructure property relationships and ultimately shorten the development cycles. We support companies in the optical industry, in specialized machine manufacturing and in the coatings industry.

We characterize nanostructured glass ceramics, effect pigments and optical coatings for lithography, laser technology and ophthalmology, among other things. We develop laser processing techniques, and we synthesize glass and glass ceramic materials with customized properties. At the same time, we consider the entire value chain from the microstructural perspective – from synthesis and processing to analytics and physical modeling.
