Personalized Vascular Prostheses Made from Biomaterials

The Fraunhofer IMWS is taking a new approach with the research project “VasoPRINT”. The goal is to develop a multilayered, biocompatible material system for vascular prostheses, inspired by the extracellular matrix.

15.9.2025

Innovative perfusion system for research on human skin

In the new research project “SkinVital,” Fraunhofer IMWS is developing a perfusion system for human skin samples.

23.1.2023

Innovative Bioinks for 3D-Bioprinting

Bioprinting aims at producing biological or biologically functional tissue in the laboratory. Using a 3D bioprinter, bioink is printed layer by layer to fabricate a complex three-dimensional object. Researchers at the Fraunhofer IMWS are developing new bioinks that are suitable for various applications.

Surface Texturing at the Micro- and Nanoscale

10.7.2025

Better adhesion of dental prostheses and splints through surface structuring

The “OptiHaft” project aims to develop innovative technologies for the micro-nano structuring of plastics for dental prostheses.

Oral Care & Dental Health

5.1.2026

New Toothpaste Stops Periodontal Pathogens

Periodontitis is widespread and can have serious consequences for overall health. Researchers at Fraunhofer have identified a substance that selectively inhibits only those bacteria that cause periodontitis, thereby preserving the natural balance of the oral microbiome.

7.3.2024

New approach against periodontitis: inhibiting bacteria in the mouth instead of destroying them

Innovative therapeutic approaches to treat periodontitis are being developed in the joint project "Paropaste". They are focusing on blocking the germs responsible for this rather than killing them.

Materials research for dental care

How do toothpastes or mouth rinses work? How does the microstructure of teeth, dental prostheses or even mouth guards differ before and after care? What shape should the bristles of too thbrushes have for optimum cleaning performance? Such questions are investigated by employees in the dental care team at the Fraunhofer IMWS. Their material science studies are the basis for characterizing and improving medical and cosmetic care products.
